Just Do Kegels?
Unfortunately, this is a very common suggestion when it comes to any pelvic floor dysfunction. However, this suggestion is outdated and we should be wary of any all encompassing “solutions”. You might be asking what kegels even are? Kegels are contractions of the pelvic floor muscles. All muscles have a range of motion that they work through. For example, your bicep muscle contracts as you bend your elbow and lengthens as you straighten your elbow. Kegels MAY be effective, but only if you are lacking strength and only if you are performing them correctly. Many people with pelvic floor dysfunction have a loss of coordination in their muscles and are not performing a proper contraction. Also, if your muscles are too tight, then kegels will only make your symptoms worse!
